Baton Rouge, LA - It didn't take long for Donald Trump to claim a win in the Louisiana Republican presidential primary, with the Associated Press calling the race just 22 minutes after the state's polls closed at 8 p.m. CT.
In the week leading up to the primary, Trump polled at the top of the class in surveys, and his raucous rally in New Orleans on Friday fed a frenzy of attendees but also led to a clash with protesters.
His supporters among Louisiana Republicans cheered on his controversial idea to build a wall between Mexico and the United States and his never-back-down approach to foreign relations, according to The Advocate.
As of 9:33 p.m., Trump leads Louisiana with 42.1 percent, according to New York Times results, with 70 percent of precincts reporting. Ted Cruz reportedly has 37.4 percent, Marco Rubio come in with 11.4 percent and John Kasich has gathered 6 percent.
Registered members of the Republican and Democratic parties could only vote for their party's candidates in this closed election.
Louisiana has 46 GOP delegates at stake. Trump is expected to walk away from the primary with the biggest share of those delegates.
A March 2 University of New Orleans poll of active registered Republican voters found 38 percent would choose Trump. Ted Cruz followed with 26 percent and Marco Rubio trailed with just 11 percent. John Kasich received only 5 percent of the vote. Undecided Republican voters made up a 20 percent chunk.
The UNO telephone poll had 1,874 responses and a 2.26 percent margin of error at a 95 percent level of confidence.
Trump's March 4 rally at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport was interrupted by protesters chanting, "USA, No Trump, No KKK, No Fascists," NOLA.com reports, and "Black Lives Matter," as Trump commanded security to "Get them."
Cruz hosted his own Louisiana rally Friday night at the Castine Center in Mandeville. About 1,500 fans donned "Choose Cruz" stickers as they listened to the Texas senator pledge to repeal the Affordable Care Act and speak of the danger a Democratic justice could pose to the Supreme Court, NOLA.com reported.
Rubio had scheduled a Feb. 29 rally in Baton Rouge, but he canceled the event to focus on his home state of Florida, instead.
So far nationally, Trump leads the field with 329 pledged delegates. Cruz has 231, Rubio has 110 and Kasich has 25.
